If they specialize in a highly technical subject such as computers or psychology, they might have degrees and experience in those areas instead. Many also have written books of their own. Publishing houses and editing services often prefer editors with graduate degrees and several years of experience in developmental editing or copy editing. Those who work as freelancers might only have an undergraduate degree, or no degree as long as they have editing experience in the publishing industry.
